AP U.S. Government and Politics: What It Is and Who Takes It
AP U.S. Government and Politics is a college-level course offered through the College Board's Advanced Placement program. It is typically taken in high school by students who want to build a rigorous understanding of how the American political system works. The course covers everything from the philosophical roots of the Constitution to the way ordinary citizens engage with politics today. For official information on the exam format and scoring, the College Board's website is the authoritative source.
What the Course Covers
The course is organized into five units:
- Foundations of American Democracy — the philosophical underpinnings of American government, the Articles of Confederation, the Constitutional Convention, federalism, and the core principles that shape how government is structured. A solid read-through of the AP U.S. Government Unit 1 Study Guide is a good starting point.
- Interactions Among Branches of Government — the powers of Congress, the presidency, and the federal judiciary; checks and balances; and how laws are made. The Unit 2 complete study guide walks through each branch in detail.
- Civil Liberties and Civil Rights — First and Second Amendment freedoms, due process, equal protection, and the landmark Supreme Court cases that have defined individual rights over time. See the Unit 3 study guide for a thorough overview.
- American Political Ideologies and Beliefs — how political socialization works, how public opinion forms, and how liberal and conservative ideologies shape policy preferences. The Unit 4 study guide covers this in depth.
- Political Participation — voting behavior, elections, political parties, interest groups, and the media's role in a democracy. Read the Unit 5 study guide for a full breakdown.
How to Study AP U.S. Government Effectively
This course has a large volume of specific content — court cases, foundational documents, vocabulary, and conceptual frameworks — that rewards systematic, repeated review rather than last-minute cramming.
- Use flashcards for vocabulary and cases. Terms like federalism, judicial review, and selective incorporation need to be automatic. Required court cases and foundational documents also need to be memorized by name and significance.
- Practice a little every day. Short daily sessions reinforce memory far better than long sessions spaced far apart. Fifteen to twenty minutes of focused review on a single unit is more effective than hours of passive re-reading.
- Test yourself regularly. After reviewing a unit, close your notes and answer questions from memory. Self-testing reveals gaps that re-reading hides. Flashcard study modes and quiz games are practical ways to do this.
- Work through each unit before moving to the next. The units build on each other — understanding the Constitution's structure makes the branches unit easier, which in turn makes civil rights case law easier to follow.
